The Los Angeles Lakers are a stupid mess at the top right now.
Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss today prevented a power move by her brothers to oust her as majority owner of the team. In one of the weirder stories to pop into the NBA, Jeanie Buss put a temporary restraining order against brothers Jim and Johnny so they couldn’t hold a meeting to elect a new board of directors for the team. The Los Angeles Times reported today that, “The brothers proposed four directors, according to court records, but didn’t include her. In order to be the controlling owner, she has to be a director,” making this a power grab on the part of the brothers.
This move is likely in response to Jeanie Buss recently ousting Jim Buss from team operations and hiring Magic Johnson in his place. The two siblings have long feuded over who should own and operate the team. Once the restraining order had been placed, the two brothers canceled their planned meeting to remove Jeanie Buss from her position. For now, Jeanie Buss will continue to be the primary owner of the Lakers. However, this is likely not the end as the two sides will probably continue their battle for control of the team behind the scenes.
There is no end in site for this feud, and it’s pathetic. The Lakers are one of the NBA’s historic franchises and they’ve been reduced to a billion-dollar toy that Dr. Jerry Buss’s children endlessly fight over. This should never have happened and yet it’s not shocking at all that it did. The NBA’s most storied and popular franchise is a joke.

As long as the Buss children are in ownership of this team they will never be good again. Any progress that’s made will be ruined by a sibling suing the other, making a power grab or leaking something incriminating. Jeanie and Magic said they want to bring back the Lakers of old, but what free agent would sign with this clown show at the moment?
