Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs went 12 rounds in a close fight. Golovkin edged him out, but will the two have a rematch in the future?

On Saturday, March 19, Gennady Golovkin faced off against Daniel Jacobs. For the better part of 12 rounds, it was an extremely close fight between the two. After going to a decision, GGG walked away with a unanimous decision win. It’s a very controversial result, which raises a certain question: will GGG and Jacobs have a rematch in the future?

As of right now, that doesn’t seem to be the plan. In a post-fight interview with Max Kellerman, Kellerman asked him about facing Canelo Alvarez and GGG really wants that matchup. Obviously, we would have to see Canelo win his fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. first, which is scheduled to go down in May.

Another option is GGG facing Billy Joe Saunders next in his home country of Kazakhstan. He seems very interested in that, especially since he’ll be able to perform in front of his own people. But, there’s no doubt that he wants that Canelo fight, not only because of the money, but to prove who’s the best in the division.

As for Jacobs, in the future, it’s a strong possibility. GGG was very respectful of Jacobs after their bout and had nothing but good things to say about him. A rematch between the two would be very interesting since it was such a closely contested fight. Many think that it was toughest test of GGG’s career, and we would have to agree.

Like we said before, a rematch isn’t likely in the immediate future. First, Saunders might be next and then GGG will probably face Canelo later this year. Maybe sometime in 2018, discussions of a rematch will begin.
