The Atlanta Braves and Allen Iverson spoofed his infamous “practice” press conference to talk to their fans about parking at the new SunTrust Park.
With the Braves moving out of Turner Field in downtown Atlanta for SunTrust Park out in the suburbs, there have been more than a few complaints about traffic, parking, and getting to the game. Luckily, the Braves were able to enlist lifetime fan Allen Iverson to help explain to the masses that there will be plenty of parking when the new stadium opens.
The bit on Twitter was, of course, a riff on the NBA Hall of Famer’s infamous rant about practice (or, if you prefer the remix, like me) from his playing days in Philadelphia. Iverson absolutely nailed the delivery and performance, and has been making a bit of a comeback after some personal issues threatened to derail his life over the past few years. It’s great to see the Braves embracing one of their most famous fans — every little bit of levity helps as the rebuilding process continues.
As far as the parking and traffic are concerned, there might actually be some headaches caused by moving the stadium to Cobb County. It is a 13-mile drive from the heart of the city to the new stadium, which could be made much longer at rush hour. Last week’s fire and bridge collapse certainly won’t make it any easier to get out to the stadium in time for the first pitch next Friday when the Braves take on the San Diego Padres for the first game in the new stadium.
Next: Is it time to talk MLB expansion again?
There are bound to be a few moments of frustration for everyone trying to get to SunTrust during the first season of games, but eventually everyone will adjust. The new stadium looks great; so let’s not sit here any more talking about parking. Enjoy the new ballpark, Braves fans.
