David Ortiz could soon rejoin the Boston Red Sox in an unspecified official role.

Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz could soon be back with the club that made him a household name.

Ortiz recently spoke to reporters at a charity event in New York, including Joe Trezza of MLB.com. Per his comments, negotiations with the club regarding his role are ongoing.

"“We’ve been talking, but right now nothing,” Ortiz said. “We’re going back and forth. At some point it’s going to happen. That organization is what I am. We’ve been talking.”"

Ortiz was further pressed about whether his role would be as a coach or front office staff, but he only answered with a terse “I’ll let you know later.”

Ortiz spent 14 of his 20 MLB seasons with Boston and retired following the 2016 season, at age 40. He still maintains strong ties not only to the Red Sox organization, but to the Boston community as well.

He won three World Series rings with the Red Sox and was named World Series MVP in 2013. Ortiz was also named to 10 American League All-Star teams during his Boston tenure and clubbed his 500th career home run for the club in 2015.

It’s thus no wonder that the Red Sox would want to bring Ortiz aboard in some capacity even if he is retired as a player. Team chairman Tom Werner even said as much during Spring Training.

"“I know David expects to have a role going forward,” Werner remarked. “We are talking to him frequently, and we expect he will have a role — which he will principally define.”"
