With the announcement of Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops retiring, fans and pundits around the world of college football have one question: why?

The party is over. And while many are sad to see him leave, there are a few that will question every aspect of the move. But the fact is Bob Stoops is retiring. After 18 seasons at the helm of the Oklahoma Sooners football program, Stoops steps aside.

In an interview with WWLS Radio, the 56-year-old coach knew taking the position at Oklahoma was not a “stepping stone” job. Once his time was up at OU, his time would be up in coach. Or so it appears. But the question remains why retire? Well, FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman may have the answer.

Stoops is the winningest coach in Oklahoma history, beginning his tenure there in 1999. With a record of 190-48, playing in a bowl game in every year, and won the BCS Championship. The team even played in three more. What was left?

Nothing. There is nothing left to prove. Bob Stoops will long be one of the best college football coach in history. Sure, the team didn’t win multiple national championships, but outside of a handful of schools, no one else played in more than one.

Stoops is married with three kids. His eldest daughter is attending college. The time with family is what he is deciding is more important. Taking the time to live life and enjoy it is what we all really want to do.

So, the question isn’t really why, but why now? That question may never receive an answer. Regardless, he decided it was time to retire.
