The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series comes to Michigan for the FireKeepers Casino 400, which sounds more like a gambling tournament than a motorsports race. But looking at the starting grid, it might be a big gamble for some teams.
Kyle Larson has captured another Coors Light Pole Award for Sunday’s race, putting him back up front as he’s continuing to battle for the Cup Series championship lead. Getting a strong result at Michigan could be major for Larson’s chances in the 2017 NASCAR season.
But hold the phone, because behind him is the Jaws of NASCAR, Martin Truex Jr. Truex can never be counted out anywhere. Then three spots behind him is Denny Hamlin, who just won Saturday’s Xfinity Series race.
Behind Hamlin, we have last week’s surprise race winner Ryan Blaney in sixth, followed by last year’s Michigan race winner Joey Logano in seventh. And in eighth, Jamie McMurray will just be hoping his car doesn’t catch fire again. There’s a lot more to win or lose than just the checkered flag, and where drivers start could have a lot to do with where they finish.
