Happy birthday, Pokemon GO! Now give us stuff.

It’s been a full year since Pokemon GO first starting heavily draining our cell phone batteries. Last summer, we flocked outside in droves attempting to catch all our favorite Pokemon. Thanks to augmented reality, we experienced the novelty of finding Pokemon hiding in our homes and our workplaces. Turns out, Pokemon were with us all along.

Now Pokemon GO is already turning one, and the game is celebrating with an anniversary event. For over two weeks, players will have a chance to catch another special edition Pikachu. This time, Pikachu is wearing Ash’s iconic Pokemon trainer hat and is guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings.

Players will also be able to purchase a limited time Anniversary Box from the in-game shop. The box includes valuable items such as Egg Incubators, Max Revives, and Raid Passes.

Speaking of Raid Passes, Pokemon GO introduced updated gym mechanics and Raid Battles into the game a couple of weeks ago as part of their wave of new content for the anniversary. This may be the reason why the anniversary event in itself feels a little sparser than usual.

Raid Battles in particular, where a team of players work together to take down a superpowered Pokemon and potentially have a chance to capture it, were an exciting new addition since they provide the game with a framework for future legendary Pokemon events.

Niantic ended its anniversary event announcement with a note that players can expect more to come in the coming weeks, including more information on Pokemon GO Fest, Pokemon GO’s first organized real life event happening later in July in Chicago.
