The Lakers are looking to make some noise in free agency before a potential big offseason in 2018, meeting with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Rajon Rondo.

The Los Angeles Lakers at this point are just biding time before they try and make a huge splash in 2018 after this next season, but it looks like they’re still pursuing some stars now just in case.

The team has been rumored to be pursuing LeBron James and Paul George next offseason to form a super team of their own to get back into contention in the loaded Western Conference, and drafted Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft to begin the process for their rebuild. However, they still need some bodies for the 2017-2018 season before they try to pursue any superstars.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the team met with free agents Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Rajon Rondo on Tuesday, both unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Caldwell-Pope was made an unrestricted free agent last week by the Detroit Pistons, and has become a hot target in free agency now as teams no longer have to worry about the Pistons just matching whatever offer they put out to the shooting guard. He averaged 13.8 points and 3.3 rebounds last season in Detroit, and could provide some solid defense for the Lakers at the 2-spot in their lineup.

Meanwhile, Rondo’s been rumored to be a serious target for the New York Knicks, and it appeared as if there was mutual interest between the two on a potential deal. There may be more potential in landing in Los Angeles, but it’d be weird to have Rondo and Ball as point guards on the roster.

The meetings are surely interesting for the Lakers, especially pursuing Rondo at a position they don’t need a starting point guard at, and it’ll be interesting to see if they can land KCP in the next few weeks of the offseason.
