Jordan Spieth celebrated his Open Championship win by having a drink. A drink out of the Claret Jug.

When you do something that only Jack Nicklaus has done in the history of golf, you are in pretty good company. That’s what Jordan Spieth accomplished with his thrilling victory in the Open Championship today, beating Matt Kuchar by three shots to get the victory.

Spieth bogeyed three of the first four holes on Sunday and then again on sixth as him and Kuchar traded the lead back and forth all afternoon. After the front nine, Kuchar and Spieth were tied for the lead.

He also went through a delay on 13 and fell one shot behind Kuchar. Spieth would take back the lead on the 15th hole and would never look back in order to win the tournament. Spieth has now won three of the four major tournaments before his 24th birthday, equaling with Nicklaus did. Arnold Palmer didn’t accomplish this and neither did Tiger Woods.

In case you did not know, when you win the Open, you take home the Claret Jug as the trophy. The Jug was first given out in 1872. In 1927, the tournament organizers decided to give the winner a replica of the trophy to have for a year while the original remains displayed in the Royal and Ancient Golf museum in Scotland. Some will display it on their mantle or in their trophy room in their house. Spieth had other ideas as shown by the video taken by fellow PGA player Justin Thomas.

To me, this is no different than a hockey player taking a drink out of the Stanley Cup after winning it.  It’s their championship and they should celebrate how they see fit. Do you see this all the time? Definitely not and it’s certainly possible that some in the world of golf could frown upon what Spieth did. Should Spieth probably use some Listerine after? Yes, that would probably be a good idea.

Nevertheless, congratulations to Jordan Spieth on winning the Jug and taking a well deserved and hard earned drink out of it.  This probably won’t be the last time Spieth will have a chance to have a beverage out of the Jug during his career.
