Liverpool and Crystal Palace both allowed three goals in their season openers, but the results were very different. The Reds were able to score three and settled for a draw with Watford. Palace were blown out by newly-promoted Huddersfield 3-0. On Saturday, the two teams meet at Anfield looking to improve on their first result of the season.
On Tuesday, Liverpool traveled to Germany to face Hoffenheim in a Champions League playoff. The Reds defeated the Bundesliga club 2-1 but the result could have been very different. Hoffenheim missed a penalty and failed to take advantage of several Liverpool defensive mistakes. Mistakes at the back cost Jurgen Klopp’s side against Watford. If Klopp does not fix those problems, it could cost the Reds a spot in the top four. On a positive side, Mohamed Salah was excellent in his debut, scoring and drawing a penalty against Watford.
Despite having 56.1 percent possession, Crystal Palace could not find the back of the net. The Eagles were able to win 12 corners but had only four shots on target. Manager Frank de Boer spent the majority of his time with Ajax using four at the back but has decided to use three at the back with Palace. After allowing three goals, including an own goal, de Boer might reconsider the formation he uses. If Liverpool continue to make defensive mistakes, Palace need Christian Benteketo finish his chances.
