The Grizzlies parted ways with head coach David Fizdale less than 24 hours after he chose not to put Marc Gasol back in during the fourth quarter of a loss to the Nets on Sunday night. Already playing without Mike Conley, and with Chandler Parsons having left that game due to a first half injury, the choice not to play Gasol was immediately set off speculations of the future of Big Spain in Memphis. But then on Monday afternoon Fizdale was the one let go.

So to help find out exactly what happened, Peter Edmiston (@peteredmiston) joins the latest anguished episode of Fastbreak Breakfast. Peter covers the Grizzlies for the Commercial Appeal and hosts Locked on Grizzlies. And he was in the locker room after the Brooklyn game to hear Gasol’s long explanation over the objections of the PR staff on why he was upset and “wasn’t going to lay down and take it.” So where does Memphis go from here? We try to answer that question and address the following topics:

  • There’s enough evidence (including motive and opportunity) to call Gasol a coach killer. Is that label fair?
  • Will there be any accountability for General Manager Chris Wallace, as another major recent franchise decision has come undone?
  • Could anyone have gotten more wins out of the roster as currently constructed?
  • Are the Grizzlies finally ready to blow it up? Would they still consider trading Gasol? What return could they expect?
  • Does firing Fizdale help Memphis in the short term or long term?
