Entering the final game of the group stage, Sevilla, Liverpool and Spartak Moscow can all advance to the round of 16 but could also finish third and advance to the Europa League. Sevilla face Maribor in their final group stage game, with a win advancing the Spanish club to the round of 16. A draw would also get Sevilla through to the knockout stage as long as Spartak do not defeat Liverpool. Maribor have been eliminated from European competitions after picking up only two points in their first five games.
Sevilla won the reverse fixture against Maribor 3-0, with Wissam Ben Yedder scoring all three goals. The French striker has scored 13 goals for the Spanish club in all competitions, including six in Champions League. Eduardo Berizzo’s side is more talented than Maribor and will push for all three points to guarantee their spot in the knockout stage.
Slovenian club Maribor picked up two points in the group stage after drawing Spartak Moscow twice. However, in three games against Sevilla and Liverpool, they have been outscored 13-0. With Darko Milanic’s team unable to advance, Maribor can try to play the role of spoiler. Maribor will push forward with Marcos Tavares leading the attack. The Brazilian striker leads the club with 12 goals in all competitions but has yet to score in Champions League.
