Lane Kiffin is reportedly getting rewarded handsomely for this incredible first season with the FAU football program.

Lane Kiffin initiated one of the best turnarounds we saw in college football this season, taking the FAU Owls from 3-9 in 2016 to 10-3 this past season and champions of Conference USA. Pulling off a feat like that warrants the head coach to be rewarded, and that is apparently exactly what the FAU administration is doing for Kiffin.

According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Bruce Feldman, just hours before FAU is set to play in its bowl game, the two sides are finalizing a huge 10-year contract extension for the controversial coach. Should Kiffin actually honor the length of the contract, then he will be staying in Boca Raton through the 2027 college football season. There’s no word yet on what the buyout number of the new deal will be, which will be interesting to see when the deal is actually finalized.

Following the incredible season that Kiffin had with the Owls in his first year at the helm, he was not considered for any of the major Power 5 jobs that were open, and soon it was evident he would be returning to FAU for the 2018 season. So, given the success the program saw this past year under Kiffin, it made all the sense in the world to tack some years on a new deal to try and keep him around for the foreseeable future.

Now, is it likely Kiffin will stay the full 10 years? Probably not, but if there’s anything that we have learned about the polarizing Kiffin, it’s that you never truly know what’s going to happen in his career. So, let’s not completely rule out Kiffin remaining the king of Boca for the next decade.

Kiffin and the Owls will cap off their 2017 season on Tuesday night when they take on the Akron Zips of the MAC in the 2017 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl.
