Through the first half of the season, Burnley and Liverpool are battling for a top-four spot. Liverpool are ahead of Burnley in the standings. The two teams face off at Turf Moor on New Year’s Day, with a valuable three points available.
Burnley have succeeded this season using defensive-first principles installed by manager Sean Dyche. Through the first 20 games of the season, only four teams have allowed fewer goals than the Clarets. Offensively, Burnley are in the bottom third of the league in scoring. Part of the Clarets’ offensive struggles have been because of Dyche’s system that does not players to take many chances going forward. However, part of their struggles can also be attributed to limited attacking talent. New Zealand international Chris Wood leads the club in scoring after the first 20 games.
Liverpool finally got their man. After months of speculation and a failed summer transfer attempt, Liverpool finally signed center-back Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75 million. However, Liverpool will not be able to register van Dijk until Jan. 2 and will not be eligible to play against Burnley. Manager Jürgen Klopp is hoping that the van Dijk signing will be as successful as the Mohamed Salah signing. Salah has been incredible since joining Liverpool, leading the Premier League in scoring. Heading into their final game of 2017 against Leicester, Liverpool had picked up 25 points in their previous 11 games.
