He’s not on the team any longer but former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is literally cashing in on the team’s run to the Super Bowl.

The New England Patriots are in the Super Bowl after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game. Quarterback Tom Brady was not hampered at all by the hand injury that had the media and Patriots in a lather for a frenzied 72-hour period and the Pats didn’t have to rely on backup quarterback Brian Hoyer. Thankfully, for the Patriots, their fans and the millions watching at home, it didn’t come to that.

I have to imagine one of the more interested parties over that time was former Patriots backup quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo who had to be wondering if he’d get a chance to suit up in the AFC Championship Game if not for the midseason trade that sent him to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a second round pick.

Garoppolo played like a future superstar down the stretch for the 49ers and the Patriots are likely wondering if they got ripped off on the deal. While the 49ers are the clear winners in the trade, Garoppolo also is making out pretty well too.

Despite not being on the team for their postseason run to the Super Bowl, Garoppolo has still cashed in. Literally. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Garoppolo has earned $79,000 and will make $56,000 if the Patriots lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. If the Patriots win another Super Bowl, Garoppolo will bank another $112,000 all for the hard work of not helping the Patriots in any way shape or form.

Not a bad deal at all.

The Patriots are favored by five points, give or take a half point depending on the oddsmakers you’re looking at, so there is a good chance Garoppolo will be getting a big bonus as he watches the game like you and me.

He’s totally entitled to the bonus, and it’s not his fault that he’s getting it, but man, am I jealous and envious that his bonus for not playing on the Patriots is way more than my annual income. This is more of a me problem than anything else, but man, I knew I should have pursued a career as a NFL quarterback.

Oh well, maybe in another life.
