Despite the fact they’re last in the Bundesliga, few teams are playing as well as Cologne, who have picked up 10 points in their last four games. On Friday, Cologne host Borussia Dortmund at RheinEnergieStadion. Dortmund have picked up points in five straight games but have ties in their last three games.
At the winter break, Cologne seemed like they would be relegated. However, the Billy Goats have already picked up more points to start the season half of the season than they did in the first half of the season. Cologne are four points back of Werder Bremen for the relegation playoff spot. The Billy Goats signed Simon Terodde as the transfer window opened to help improve their offense. Terodde has scored three goals in his first three games with Cologne. While Terodde has helped Cologne’s offense, the Billy Goats have scored the fewest goals in the Bundesliga and allowed the third most goals.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s tenure with Borussia Dortmund finally came to an end, as the Gabon international officially signed with Arsenal. With Aubameyang now gone, Dortmund will have to find a player to replace Aubameyang’s 13 goals this season. Internally, manager Peter Stoger will likely give Alexander Isak, André Schürrle or Andrey Yarmolenko the chance to replace Aubameyang. Defensively, Stoger has helped provide stability to the back four after the unit had fallen apart under previous manager Peter Bosz. Full-back Jeremy Toljan has had a breakout season for Dortmund, receiving increased playtime thanks to injuries to Raphaël Guerreiro and Marcel Schmelzer. Additionally, Toljan is considering playing for the United States internationally after representing Germany at the Olympics and youth levels.
