Is Riverdale new tonight, February 14?

Like many other scripted shows, Riverdale is taking most of February off to avoid the Olympics and to make sure the 22-episode season will last until May.

Riverdale will be on break until March, and depending on your opinion about the direction of season 2 so far, this may be a good thing or a bad thing. Yes, the episodes in 2018 so far can easily be classified as a mess, but the last episode showed some promise that Riverdale may be on its way to finding its footing again.

Now, viewers will have to wait a few weeks to find out if the show can stick the landing on the twist that Hermione is really the mob boss of the Lodge family. Throughout season 2, the show has been building up the idea that Hiram was the criminal mastermind plotting something sinister for Riverdale. Hermione seemed to just be following her husband’s lead, but now that has been flipped on its head. And it also gets rid of one of the ridiculous plot lines from the back half of the season so far.

Thankfully, Archie Andrews was never actually working for the FBI. Instead, “Agent Adams” was really working for Hermione. The entire storyline was just a test of Archie’s loyalty to the Lodges. He passed the test and has been welcomed into the family by Hermione. When Riverdale returns, it will be interesting to see what it means for Archie to be part of the family.

While that storyline has some promise, there are a few other plot lines that should just go away. Mostly anything involving “Dark Betty” and Chic. Since being introduced in episode 10, Chic’s main role has been to look creepy, convince his 16-year old sister to start a web cam show, and get his mother to kill a drug dealer for him.

There is still a lot of season left, so hopefully Riverdale has a solid plan for this character. If it is revealed that Chic is really the son of Alice and FP, then that will start to redeem that character a little bit. But only if the show starts to also explain his creepy behavior other than it just being this Cooper sibling darkness.

Also, please Riverdale, scale back Jughead’s out of nowhere devotion to the Southside Serpents. I get it in terms of building up the tensions between the two sides of town storyline. But it just makes no sense for the character that was introduced in season 1 or the Jughead of early season 2.
