And then there were 27 heroes on the Overwatch roster.

Squires are the new Mercy, haven’t you heard?

Overwatch announced its newest hero on Wednesday, adding engineer Brigitte (pronounced “Bra-geeta”) Lindholm into the test servers while also officially releasing information about her backstory.

While Brigitte is a new hero, her character isn’t new to Overwatch. For those who follow the game’s lore, Brigitte has made appearances in both Reinhardt’s digital short as well as the recent Reinhardt-centric Overwatch comic. Why is she so involved with Reinhardt? She’s the hefty warrior’s squire, and has known Reinhardt since she was a girl. Reinhardt and her father were very good friends, her father being Torbjorn.

That’s right, Brigitte is the daughter of love-him-or-hate-him turret builder Torbjorn, which means Overwatch now has two parent-offspring pairings in the game.

Brigitte’s close relationships with Reinhardt and Torbjorn perfectly explain the toolkit she brings to the game. Classified as a support hero, Brigitte builds Repair Packs that she can throw at teammates to heal them, much like how her father tosses out armor to provide allies with shielding.

In one hand, Brigette wields a Rocket Flail, which is essentially a hammer with a detachable mace-like head that gives it extended range. When she melees enemies with the flail, she also provides surrounding teammates with healing. In the other hand, Brigette carries a shield. It’s much narrower than Reinhardt’s, but is still able to provide both herself and teammates immediately behind her with protection. And just as Reinhardt can throw himself forward to charge at foes, Brigette has her version of the move called Shield Bash which is available to her when holding her up the shield.

Brigette’s ultimate is called Rally. It temporarily increases her movement speed, and also gifts teammates around her with armor. This may sound like Lucio’s Sound Barrier, but it differs in that Brigette’s armor lasts until it is eaten away by damage. For providing multiple allies at once extra health, Rally may be much more effective and is certainly much longer lasting than Sound Barrier. Additionally, when she triggers Rally, players will hear a swelling of horns (think any time a character from any fantasy movie has blown a war horn), which we think will provide players an increased level of motivation and inspiration out-of-game that will be very beneficial.

With a face like Belle from Beauty and the Beast and her combo tank/healer abilities, Brigette is already looking like a huge fan favorite. She is now available to play on the PTR. If you want to learn more about her abilities, check out her new page on Overwatch‘s site or watch Jeff Kaplan talk about her in the developer’s update video.
