Southampton and Stoke are both battling relegation, having spent most of the season near the bottom three. The Saints are 16th with 27 points, however, goal differential is the only reason they are not in the bottom three. The Potters only have one point less than Southampton but are 19th in the Premier League. A win for either team on Saturday, will at least for one week, move that team out of the relegation zone. While the loser will dig themselves into an even deeper hole.
Southampton were able to steal a point from Burnley in their last game. Manolo Gabbiadini scored his fourth goal of the season in the 90 minute to pick up a point for Southampton. The Saints have picked up seven points in their last six games to get out of the relegation zone. With leading scorer Charlie Austin injured, Gabbiadini will likely start against Stoke.
Stoke are second from the bottom because they have not been able to defend this season. The Potters have allowed a league-worst 54 goals this season. In the first five games under Paul Lambert, Stoke have improved allowing only four goals and picking up six points. However, an own-goal from keeper Jack Butland cost the team points against Leicester, forcing the Potters to settle for a 1-1 draw. Offensively, Stoke have leaned heavily on Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri. Shaqiri has played a role in 13 of Stoke’s 28 goals this season, scoring seven times and adding six assists.
