Malaga sit in last place in La Liga, and they’re all but relegated with seven matches still to play. They’ve collected 17 points in the season in total, and need at least five wins in the last seven to have a chance at staying up. Considering they’ve only scrapped together 17 in the other 31 matches, it seems extremely unlikely to happen at this point. Malaga have won once in their last 17 matches coming into their battle with Real Madrid, and only have scored six goals in that span. They have no room for error, but it’s all but over at this point, especially when they face Madrid and Real Betis — fourth and fifth in La Liga — in their final seven games.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, has had a similarly disappointing league season, although in completely different ways than Malaga. Zinedine Zidane’s side is all but assured Champions League competition next year by finishing in the top four, but they’re a whopping 15 points behind their rivals Barcelona in first. They just hung on to beat Juventus on aggregate in the Champions League thanks to a late penalty kick from Cristiano Ronaldo. This match should be a walk in the park for Madrid, as Malaga have been dreadful this entire season.
