Chelsea will play a re-match of their second to last Premier League game against Southampton in the FA Cup semifinals. In that contest, the Saints took a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute, but couldn’t hold on as Chelsea scored three goals in nine minutes to all but end Southampton’s hopes of staying in the Premier League. Chelsea nearly lost in their first FA Cup match against Norwhich, but prevailed on penalties to make it through. They’ve dominated the last three matches in the competition, and were lucky enough to draw the Saints instead of Manchester United or Tottenham.
Southampton were just 40 minutes away from making things a lot more interesting in the relegation battle, but crumbled in epic fashion to lose 3-2 against Chelsea a week ago. A draw against Leicester in the next match doesn’t really matter, as they need three points from here on out to have a shot at staying up. Southampton will try to exact revenge on their Premier League foes by knocking them out of the FA Cup, but it might just be a footnote in an otherwise devastating season if the Saints end up going down at the end.
