Despite this being her first hosting gig on Saturday Night Live since Dec. 19, 2015 (seems like forever ago), it is not Tina Fey’s first time performing at 30 Rock this year. That’s right; before NBC took SNL off the air for the 2018 Winter Olympics hiatus and right before the Super Bowl, Tina appeared during a 1775-era sketch repping Philadelphia while Rachel Dratch represented New England.
Even with Andy Samberg also appearing that episode, I doubt that Tina Fey’s hosting gig on Saturday Night Live this week won’t attract even more stars. Usually, you get that kind of star-studded affair on season finales, but with Michael Cohen and Robert Mueller in the news, we could see the return of Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro right off the bat once again.
It’s actually Tina Fey’s first SNL hosting gig in close to five years by herself, as last time she was supported by co-host Amy Poehler. Her last solo gig was when Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney had their very first episode, as John Milhiser, Mike O’Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan have long since been removed from the show.
It should be an absolute walk in the park for Fey, who has made each of her appearances memorable and excellent. I hope to see more boundary-pushing sketches again tonight, as “Meet Your Second Wife” showed surrealist comedy taken to the extreme when she was last on. Plus, Kate McKinnon will complete her seventh year on the show tonight, so keep an eye out for teary-eyed farewell sketches.
Nicki Minaj, would you believe it, is entering tonight with her third stint as the musical guest. She has a bit of acting range, too, so I hope we get to see her in a sketch before the night ends and in-between (likely) performances of “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li,” both of which come off her upcoming album, Queen.
