PGA DFS Fan Duel / Draftkings Value Plays: St. Jude Classic

Welcome to my PGA Value Plays for the St. Jude Classic.  Who am I?  I’m Ryan Morgan, RyanSauruSsss on the tweets, feel free to find me and say hello! I have been playing DFS for the past 3 years and in my opinion PGA DFS is by far the best bang for your buck. There is nothing like a 4 day constant sweat to see if your team can make it through the weekend, and then to the top.  Whether you are new to the sport, or a seasoned vet, every week is a new animal to dissect and this week’s tournament is no different. In this article I am trying to identify the best value plays of the weekend, using statistics, to help fill out a winning lineup. I am focusing on Fan Duel and Draftkings, but the data and plays can easily be applied to any platform.

The Course

Coming off a star-studded event at The Memorial, the St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind is about as big a 180 as you can get. Typically we see multiple high-priced golfers withdraw as they qualify for, and prep for next week’s US Open. It offers a unique chance to apply different strategies than a typical group of players. I am an extremely statistic based player and my analysis will lean heavily on numbers over “gut.” TPC Southwind is a technical course, that as a par 70, average 70.63 strokes per round over the last few years.  The course is 7,238 yards but it does not favor long drivers as you might think. There are 4 Par 3s, 2 Par 5s and 14 Par 4s.  Finding the greens, and picking the spots to be aggressive is the best strategy to a low score.

Stats to focus on:

Course History

GIR: Greens in Regulation

Form

SG:T2G – Strokes Gained Tee to Green

Proximity to Hole on Approach

% Going for It Par 4s and 5s

PGA DFS: The Picks:

Chez Reavie

Fan Duel: $9200 Draftkings: $7600

His form has not been the best but Chez has the history and game to make his way up the leaderboard. Reavie has 3 top 30s including 2 Top 15s at Southwind, since 2013. 27th in SG:Approach, 16th Prox to Hole, and 31st GIR. He is significantly less on Draftkings but is still a great value on FanDuel. Safe with upside he will be in a few of my lineups.

More from FanSided

Scott Piercy

Fan Duel: $9400 Draftkings: $7400

One of the better known golfers at this price range, Piercy may be high owner but for good reason. He ranks 17th in SG: T2G, including #1 in SG: Approach, and 14th in GIR. He is another golfer that has been a little off his game but with a weaker field I am not as worried. If he can put it together Piercy has the tools and pedigree to get his 2nd win of the tour.

Tom Hoge

Fan Duel: $8200 Draftkings: $7300

Hoge comes with a little more risk than Piercy or Reavie. His history is not as strong with a MC last year but he does have a 34th in 2016 and a nice 12th in 2015. What excites me more is that he is 4th in Proximity to Hole, and despite only hitting 63% of his greens he has the potential to recover as he is 23rd in Scrambling, and 40th in SG:Approach. His form is picking up as well. After missing 3 cuts in a row he has made his last 2 and T13th at Memorial last week which shares a lot of the technical aspects of TPC Southwind.

Others on the Radar:

Brian Gay

FD: $8200 DK: $7500 – 6th in 2016, accurate driver, great at scrambling and Goes for It on 64% of Par 4s and Par 5s, decent form and a consistent putter.

Stewart Cink

FD: $8100 DK: $6800 – Cink always has the potential to put up a top 10. He is very familiar with this course and was 10th last year. His form is not great, but is accurate to the pin, ranking 16th Prox to Hole. Oh and on Draftkings he’s only $6800 which is an amazing value.
