The fifth and final season of The Originals concludes on Wednesday night with episode 13, “’When the Saints Go Marching In.”

The end of The Originals is here. Wednesday’s series finale is the end of a journey that started back in season 2 of The Vampire Diaries. And it seems to revolve around an event that seemed impossible to happen, Klaus’ event.

For years, Klaus was protected by layers of plot armor. Seasons 2 and 3 of TVD featured elaborate plots to kill Klaus, all leading up to the reveal that all of the main characters are part of Klaus’ sire line and killing him would kill almost everyone.

But that protection ended in season 3 of The Originals when Klaus was unlinked from his sire line, setting the groundwork for this ending where he will sacrifice himself to save Hope. But not before one last Mikaelson family gathering in New Orleans.

While the penultimate episode was all about setting up the sequel, the finale is all about The Originals. And with no big bad to fight and Hope safe, it seems like it will be an hour all about the relationships that have been built between the characters for the past five seasons.

If losing Klaus wasn’t enough , that likely won’t be the only major death coming in the finale. Back in June, executive producer Julie Plec warned fans to “buckle up” as there were more major deaths to come, five in total before the series finally ended.

So far, including what is looking like the likely death of Klaus, there has only been one other significant death (Josh) since Hayley’s death. That leaves three significant death spots up for grabs and just one last episode. This could prove to be a rough episode if after five seasons, three more main characters die.
