Bayern Munich begin the defense of their Bundesliga title on Friday against Hoffenheim. The Bavarian giants have won the past six Bundesliga titles but made several changes this summer. Hoffenheim have risen to prominence over the past two seasons under manager Julian Nagelsmann. Since Nagelsmann took over as Hoffenheim manager on Feb. 11, 2016, only Bayern have more points. However, this season will be the last for Nagelsmann at the club. The manager has agreed to a contract with RB Leipzig to become their manager in 2019.

Former Bayern defender Nico Kovac takes over for Jupp Heynckes as manager. The Croatian had a successful run managing Eintracht Frankfurt, winning the DFK Pokal last season. In his first game, Kovac led Bayern to a 5-0 win in the German Supercup against his former team. Robert Lewandowski scored three goals and again will be heavily favored to lead the Bundesliga in scoring. However, in his second game, Kovac’s side needed a late goal to get past a club playing in German’s fourth league in the DFB Pokal.

Bayern were not busy in the transfer window, signing only one player, Leon Goretzka on a free transfer. Goretzka replaces Arturo Vidal, who was expected to leave the club and joined Barcelona. After spending last season away from the club on loan, Renato Sanches returns from Swansea and Serge Gnabry returns from Hoffenheim.

In their first two games under Kovac, Bayern have used a 4-1-4-1 formation. Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba will get the majority of starts at full-back. While the trio of Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, and Niklas Sule will split games at center-back. Javi Martinez has been Kovac’s first choice, playing above the back four. While Arjen Robben, Thiago, Thomas Muller and Franck Ribery play in their familiar positions behind Lewandowski.

Hoffenheim had a busy summer, attempting the replace the players that have left for bigger clubs over the past year. However, while achtzehn99 have made a few signings, they have financial limitations despite qualifying for the Champions League. The club looked for value signings in the summer, signing Leonardo Bittencourt from relegated Koln and Vincenzo Grifo from Borussia Monchengladbach. Both players will provide service to striker Andrej Kramaric. The Croatian international is the best player on the club, scoring 13 goals and adding eight assists last season.

While Hoffenheim are unlikely to finish in the top four for a third straight season, they could challenge for a spot in Europe. However, the club will have to overcome early-season injuries. Midfielders Lukas Rupp, Dennis Geiger, Nadiem Amiri, and Kerem Demirbay will all be out at least a month. The injuries will test Hoffenheim’s midfield depth but open the door to younger players getting more playing time.
