Week 3 typically give us the best preseason look at each team’s starters and veterans. With Case Keenum and Alex Smith both in new uniforms and still settling in, expect to see the first-team offenses for extended plays.

The NFL Preseason has varying degrees of importance depending on who you’re asking. Rams running back Todd Gurley obviously doesn’t put much stock into the four exhibition games. To teams like the Redskins and Broncos, with new starting quarterbacks, offensive line issues to work out, and questions about depth at certain positions, these four preseason games, this one in particular, probably mean a lot more.

The Redskins signed veteran running back Adrian Peterson earlier this week and him to see several carries tonight. He’ll join Chris Thompson, Rob Kelley, Byron Marshall and Samaje Perine in a stable of running backs. Marshall and Perine are both facing injuries coming into the season to Peterson will likely be competing with Thompson and Kelley but where on the depth chart he falls and how the carries are split between backs are yet to be determined.

The Broncos aren’t getting their first look at a newly signed veteran but they face similar issues at running back. Devontae Booker is the presumed starter but De’Angelo Henderon, Royce Freeman, David Williams, and Phillip Lindsay are pushing for places on the depth chart and carries this season.

In addition to sorting out the running back position, Alex Smith and Case Keenum and both still working on timing and chemistry with a new crop of receivers and reshuffled offensive lines. Both are veteran quarterbacks and there are vets on offense for both teams, but the best (or maybe only way) to build continuity is by getting reps. That’s what tonight presents for Denver and Washington.
