After being linked to head coaching opportunities with the Knicks and Raptors, it was a somewhat a surprise (at least to this podcast) when Jerry Stackhouse joined the Grizzlies staff. But as Stackhouse says on a new episode of Fastbreak Breakfast, once the doors closed to him in New York and Toronto, he didn’t hesitate to accept an offer when Memphis coach J.B. Bickerstaff reached out. As his mom always taught him, “a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.”

So what will his role be on the coaching staff? What lessons from his time as head coach of Raptors 905 will he apply in Memphis? And what career first does he pledge to help Mike Conley accomplish this season? Stackhouse addresses all of these, plus the following topics:

  • Is there any chance of finding donuts in NBA locker rooms? What snacks does he try to sneak on team flights?
  • What style of offense are the Grizzlies going to play? Is there a goal to get Memphis away from shooting (and missing) so many midrange jumpers?
  • Which of the wings on the Grizzlies are going to step up to provide some sorely needed offense?
  • What happened to all the shooting guards in the league? Is there a reason there seems to be fewer two guards capable of getting 20 points a night now compared to when Stackhouse was in his prime?
