Ajax face AEK at Johan Cruijff Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

The Champions League begins this week. In Group E action, Ajax host Greek side AEK Athens in Amsterdam. After a three-year absence, Ajax make their return to the Champions League. The Dutch side have not made it out of the group stage since 2005-06. AEK qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2006-07 but have never made it out of the group stage since the tournament switched to its current format.

Ajax had to go through three playoff rounds to qualify for the Champions League, eliminating Sturm Graz, Standard Liege, and Dynamo Kyiv. Erik ten Hag’s side have started the season with 13 points in their first five games. Despite being 35 years old, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is still scoring goals. Huntelaar has scored 10 goals in 11 games, including four goals in Champions League qualifying. Ajax success in the Champions League will be dependent on their young stars. The club’s 19-year-old captain and center-back Matthijs de Ligt is one of the most sought-after players in Europe. While midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a potential move to Barcelona.

AEK also had to go through the playoff route to qualify. The Athens side defeated Celtic and MOL Vidi to qualify for the group stage. The Double-Headed Eagle have won all three of their Super League games to start the season. Viktor Klonaridis leads the club with four goals in all competitions and will be the focal point of AEK’s attack.

Ajax and AEK have only played two games against each other. In 1994-95 group stage, Ajax beat AEK twice, on way to winning the Champions League title that year.
