Lokomotiv Moscow face Schalke at VEB Arena on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

Despite being one of the eight seeded teams in the Champions League draw, Lokomotiv Moscow lost 3-0 to Galatasaray in their opening game. On Wednesday, the Russian club host Bundesliga runners-up Schalke. The Royal Blues could have lost their opening game too but were able to hold Porto to a 1-1 draw.

Lokomotiv have had a poor start to the Russian season, picking up only 12 points in their first nine games. Moscow defeated Akhmat Grozny on Saturday, ending a three-game slide that saw the team pick up only one point. Manuel Fernandes scored for Moscow against Akhmat Grozny, giving him a share of the team lead in goals. Lokomotiv will be without their best striker Fedor Smolov, who will miss the game with a shoulder injury. The Russian club will rely on Eder to pick up the slack for the injury Smolov.

After losing their first five Bundesliga games of the season, Schalke picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Mainz 1-0. Despite the win, the Royal Blues are still second from the bottom in the Bundesliga. Domenico Tedesco used a back three for almost every game in his year-plus tenure in charge of the Royal Blues. However, that changed on Saturday as Tedesco decided to use a back four. The change to the back four played immediate dividends as Schalke kept their first clean sheet of the season. While the change worked out against Mainz, time will tell if the back four is a long-term fix for the Royal Blues problems.

The defensive woes are far from the only problem for the Royal Blues. Schalke have struggled to score goals, finding the back of the net only three times in six Bundesliga games. The biggest problem for Tedesco is the construction of his squad. Schalke’s roster is filled with defensive midfielders that struggle to move the ball forward and create chances for the strikers.

Lokomotiv Moscow and Schalke have never played against each other before. However, the game will be of huge importance to Benedikt Howedes. The Lokomotiv center-back joined Schalke as a youth player in 2001 and spent the next 16 years with the club, spending several years as team captain. Howedes had a falling out with Tedesco leading to Howedes being loaned to Juventus last season and being sold to Moscow this summer.
