The Champions League group stage wraps up with Wednesday with Viktoria Plzen hosting Roma at Doosan Arena. Roma will finish second in the group have already qualified for the knockout stage. Plzen can qualify for the Europa League knockout stage if Real Madrid beat CSKA Moscow. The Czech side also hold the tiebreaker over CSKA, so as long as they match CSKA’s result, they will drop down to the Europa League.
Viktoria Plzen are unbeaten in their last nine games but have dropped to second in the Czech league. In the previous game against Roma, the Italian team dominated Plzen, winning 5-0 at the Stadio Olimpico. Edin Dzeko scored a hat-trick, while Cengiz Under scored a goal and had two assists. Plzen might get lucky, as Dzeko could miss the game with an injury. The loss of Michael Krmencik has been tough for Plzen to overcome. Krmencik is still leading the club with nine goals this season. Tomas Chory has replaced Krmencik in the lineup and has scored six goals.
Eusebio Di Francesco is on the hot seat in Rome. Roma are eighth in Serie A and have not won any of their last three games. While Roma have struggled in Italy, they have played better in the Champions League. In addition to potentially being without Dzeko, Stephan El Shaarawy, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Daniele De Rossi could miss another Wednesday’s game too. With all of the injuries, Di Francesco might decide to rest his players and prevent anyone else from getting injured so that they can focus on Serie A.

Viktoria Plzen were eliminated in the Europa League round of 16 last season by Sporting. If they qualify for the Europa League, they will look to make a deeper run this year. Roma made a surprising run to the semifinal last year but have not made it past the round of 16 since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons when they were eliminated in the quarterfinal by Manchester United in both years.
