Before the third-round finish, Joaquim Silva says he essentially finished Jared Gordon in the first round at UFC Milwaukee.

According to Joaquim Silva, he actually finished Jared Gordon in the first round of their fight at UFC Milwaukee.

At the start of the fight, Gordon got the better of Silva in the standup, dropping Silva in the middle of the first round. The fight went to the ground momentarily, but when both men returned to their feet, Gordon continued to hit Silva with some heavy shots that stunned the Brazilian. Silva wasn’t out of the fight completely though and landed a knee that rocked Gordon. As Gordon went for a takedown, Silva wrapped up a guillotine and it looked as though Gordon had been put to sleep considering he dropped a little before the sound of the horn.

Even though Gordon walked back to his corner, Silva told media backstage he did indeed go to sleep.

“He went to sleep and woke up,” said Silva.

After the first round, Silva started to open up more and found more success in the second round. In a fight littered with close calls, Silva almost finished the fight again when he locked in a kneebar on Gordon but ran out of time. Going into the third and final round, judges had Gordon up on the scorecards, but Silva believed he did enough to win those.

“I think that at the end of the first round, he went to sleep in the guillotine. At the end of the second round, I heard his knee pop, so I think I won both rounds,” said Silva.

The third round was where the fight ended, with Silva knocking out Gordon in scary fashion. Despite his background in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Silva said that his striking has gotten better due to his work in muay thai.

“I come from jiu-jitsu, but I started doing muay thai and I learned that I could knock people out, so at the point where I could do it, I look for it and go for the knockout.”

Silva returns to the win column after suffering the first loss of his professional career to Vinc Pichel at UFC on Fox: Jacare vs. Brunson 2 in January 2018.
