The new year gets underway right away with Arsenal and Fulham meeting at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners enter the game looking up at the top four. Arsenal moved five points behind Chelsea in the race for a spot in the Champions League. Fulham have played better since Claudio Ranieri took over but are still in the relegation zone after 20 games.
Arsenal were humiliated in their last game, losing 5-1 at Anfield over the weekend. The Gunners have picked up only four points in their last four games and falling further away from a Champions League spot. Unai Emery will have to solve Arsenal’s defensive woes if they are going to qualify for the Champions League. Arsenal have conceded 30 goals over their first 20 games. Up front, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been great this season. Aubameyang is tied for the Premier League lead with 13 goals this season.
Fulham defeated Huddersfield 1-0 on Saturday. The Cottagers have picked up nine points in their first eight games under Ranieri. The win over Huddersfield was the second clean sheet for Fulham in their last three games. After allowing 31 goals in their first 12 games, Fulham have conceded only 12 goals in their last eight games. The Cottagers entered 2019 with 14 points, one point behind Southampton and potential Premier League survival. If the Cottagers are going to survive, Fulham will have to continue playing better defensive and Aleksandar Mitrovic and Andre Schurrle will have to keep scoring. Mitrovic scored his eighth goal of the season against Huddersfield, while Schurrle has five goals.
