When does Supernatural return with new episodes? The CW‘s longest-running show has been off the air for a while, so fans may be wondering when Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester will be back hunting demons and monsters.

The series is in repeats again this week—this Thursday is a rerun of season 14’s ninth episode, “The Spear.” The episode brings back Garth (guest star DJ Qualls, Legit) because Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) need some help in their battle against the Archangel Michael. The trio split up to look for some weapons that may tip the fight in their favor, but will Garth really make any difference?

The choice is somewhat ironic, since “The Spear” was also the last new episode of Supernatural, back on Dec. 13. It’s been three reruns over the last month.

But there’s a reason for that! Sam and Dean are returning next week, on Jan. 17. The next episode is called “Nihilism” and brings the Michael storyline to a tipping point. The Archangel is now taking over Dean’s body, which makes it an even rougher season for him. Sam hopes he can appeal to his brother and break him out of Michael’s control before the monster army descends.

So re-airing the previous episode this week gives audiences a refresher course before the story continues. And it’ll be worth the wait: this episode is also directed by Amanda Tapping (Stargate SG-1, Sanctuary). This will be Tapping’s fourth time directing the show, and she always turns in excellent episodes.

So hold on, Supernatural fans; the show isn’t new this week, but the conclusion you’re waiting for is just around the corner.
