After suffering yet another defeat, Newcastle find themselves below the relegation line at a critical point in the season. With the majority of the season behind them, the Magpies will need to find a way to rally. They’ll face a surprisingly tough test on Saturday from a surging Cardiff team. The Welsh side has put together a decent run of form as of late, climbing out of the bottom three and hoping to stay safe from relegation as the season reaches its climax.
Only one point separates the two teams at this point in the season, making this a critical fixture for the bottom half of the table. Cardiff endured a brutal beginning to their first season back in the top flight of English soccer, going winless for the first eight weeks of the season. Scoreless draws and the occasional win have kept Cardiff afloat in the relegation race, and their draw with Huddersfield last week gave them the point they needed to climb out of the bottom three altogether.
Despite Cardiff’s recent good fortune, their fight is far from over. With so many teams with similar point totals at the bottom of the table, these next several weeks will go a long way towards determining who stays up and who doesn’t. A win for Newcastle would be their first in over a month, and would temporarily keep them out of the bottom three, at least for a week. They’ll need to put together a string of successful results to move up in the table. As for Cardiff, a win on Saturday will help put more distance between them and Newcastle – and therefore more distance between them and the bottom three teams in the league.
Saturday’s game is nowhere near the star studded affair that many Premier League fans will look forward to, but the relegation battle is always one of the more interesting and compelling parts of any Premier League season. This year is no different, and the Newcastle/Cardiff result could go a long way towards the eventual end of that story.
