Liverpool face Bayern Munich at Anfield on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The second half of the Champions League round of 16 kicks off on Tuesday, with a marquee fixture between Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Liverpool finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage but are tied with Manchester City for first in the Premier League. Bayern won their group but a poor first half of the season have chasing Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool’s front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamad Salah often get all of the headlines and overshadow the Reds’ defense. Jurgen Klopp’s side have conceded a Premier League best 15 goals. However, on Tuesday, they will have to play Bayern without their best defender, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender has been excellent since joining the club from Southampton, helping them reach the Champions League final last season. Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip will likely start at center-back on Tuesday and have the difficult task of stopping Robert Lewandowski. While Liverpool’s defense could have problems, their front three will likely give Bayern fits all day. The Bavarian side have struggled this season to keep the ball out of their own net and the fast pressing side of the Reds will likely cause mistakes and lead to Liverpool goals.
Bayern have rebounded after a poor start to the season, winning nine of their last 10 Bundesliga games. Despite the string of wins, Bayern still have issues. Center-backs Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, and Niklas Sule have struggled to mark faster players. Up front, Lewandowski remains a threat to score whenever he touches the ball. Niko Kovac has been criticized for most of his tenure with Bayern but he has started to phase in the younger players as Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have seen their roles reduced. Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry have both played very well since the start of the second half of the season.
