The Netherlands survived New Zealand in their first group stage game at the Women’s World Cup and ran into an even tougher test in their second game against Cameroon. However, they struck first blood, thanks to a brilliant team goal finished off by star striker Vivianne Miedema.

Undoubtedly one of the top five strikers in the world, Vivianne Miedema has been scoring goals at a prolific rate for both her club team Arsenal and for her national team the Netherlands. Miedema was instrumental in her team’s 2017 European Championship victory, and she’ll be just as important in their march towards this year’s finals.

Although Miedema didn’t add to her tally against New Zealand, she scored in the first half of the Netherlands’ second group stage game against Cameroon. The goal was her 59th in international play, and it ties her with Manon Melis for the most goals in national team history.

Miedema scored off of a header, finishing off a wonderful team move that included an inch-perfect one-two on the right flank. Lyon star Shanice van de Sanden’s cross was delightful, and Miedema peeled off of her marker to head home with a real striker’s finish.

Moments later, Cameroon tied the game with a great solo goal from hard-working forward Gabrielle Onguene. But with Miedema on the mark for the first time in this year’s Women’s World Cup, the Netherlands attack seems to be in business and ready to score more.

What makes Miedema’s record-tying 59th goal even more remarkable is the fact that the Arsenal superstar is just 22. Her goal-scoring record is insane, as she’s now scored 59 goals in 76 appearances for her national team, and that goes with 26 goals in just 30 games as Arsenal’s superstar striker.

Miedema, who won two Bundesliga titles at Bayern Munich and scored more goals than appearances at Heerenveen to start her career, is only getting better and better. This team goal is a reminder of how excellent the Netherlands front three is, and they are capable of going far in the tournament with Miedema shining brightly.
