Stipe Miocic reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title when he defeated Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 241.

The first time Cormier and Miocic met was at UFC 226, where Cormier had the rare opportunity of becoming a double champion with a win over the then-champion in Miocic. Cormier was able to become exactly that when he knocked out Miocic in the first round of their fight.

Now that Cormier carried the light heavyweight and heavyweight championships at the same time, he opted to defend the newly acquired title first. Cormier took on Derrick Lewis a few months after the Miocic fight in the main event of UFC 230. He defeated Lewis by way of second round rear-naked choke.

Shortly after the successful title defense over Lewis, Cormier need to take care of some business outside of the Octagon and underwent surgery for a back injury. With the re-emergence of light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Cormier relinquished the title and prepared for his next fight against what seemed to be former champion, Brock Lesnar. However, with Lesnar making the decision to retire, Cormier was left without an opponent for a short time before the Miocic rematch presented itself.

Miocic has not competed since the Cormier fight, which means he has been away for a little over a year. Although he began warming up to the idea of fighting again without getting the rematch against Cormier, Miocic got his wish when the Lesnar fight fell through.

In his post-fight interview with UFC color commentator Joe Rogan, Miocic praised his opponent and spoke about making certain adjustments that brought about the end of the fight.

“I knew I was hurting him,” said Miocic.

Rogan also interviewed Cormier, who spoke well about Miocic. He admitted that he may have taken some of the strikes from Miocic for granted. Cormier finished his interview by discussing the possibility of retirement, but was not willing to make a decision before speaking to his loved ones.
