Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura takes on The Miz at Clash of Champions on Sunday, September 15.

Shinsuke Nakamura has held the Intercontinental Championship since Extreme Rules in July. At one point, it seemed like Ali would be the one challenging for the title, but he’s been preoccupied with the King of the Ring tournament. In recent weeks, Nakamura aligned himself with Sami Zayn, with Zayn serving as his mouthpiece.

When Nakamura became WWE‘s Intercontinental Champion, he became only the second wrestler to hold both WWE and New Japan Pro Wrestling’s IWGP Intercontinental title. The only other wrestler to do so is Chris Jericho. The Miz has held the IC title eight times. At Clash of Champions, he looks to tie Jericho with the most IC title reigns.

A few weeks ago on Smackdown Live, Nakamura attacked the A-Lister at Zayn’s guidance. The following week, Miz antagonized Zayn by saying he’s mouthpiece because he can’t hack it as a wrestler. He laid down the challenge to face the Intercontinental Champion for his title at the upcoming pay-per-view. Zayn came out and says he’s a liberator and called Miz “The King of Soft Style.” Miz was on his way to getting physical with Zayn when he was blindsided by Nakamura. “The Artist” accepted The Miz’s challenge via social media.

In recent weeks, WWE has been celebrating 40 years of the Intercontinental Championship. There’s no doubt that The Miz has been a big part of it’s recent history. He could easily hold it nine times, but The King of Strong Style is a formidable opponent, especially with Zayn by his side. Unless he’s banned from ringside, he is likely to get involved to help his friend retain the title.
