The Champions League group stage wraps up on Wednesday with Bayer Leverkusen hosting Juventus. The reigning Italian champions have already won the group and will advance to the knockout stage. Second place in the group will come down to Atletico Madrid and Leverkusen. Atletico enter the final game with seven points, one point more than the German club.
For Bayer Leverkusen to advance to the Champions League knockout stage, they have to beat Juventus and get some help from Lokomotiv Moscow. With Atletico Madrid holding the tiebreaker over Leverkusen, the German club have to hope that Lokomotiv can steal points from Atletico. Leverkusen got off to a terrible start in the group stage, losing their first three games. However, manager Peter Bosz was able to rally his team, leading them to two straight wins. Kevin Volland will play a key role in Leverkusen’s attack on Wednesday. Volland leads the club with seven goals and six assists in all competitions this season.
With the group already won, Juventus do not have to play all of their starters. Since Cristiano Ronaldo was recently battling an injury, it would make sense for the Italian club to hold their Portuguese superstar out and give him some extra recovery time. The extra rest should only benefit Juventus’ chances to win the Champions League and repeat as Serie A champions. Juventus have won eight straight Serie A titles but are facing extremely tough competition from Inter Milan, who currently hold a two-point lead atop the table.

Leverkusen and Juventus have played three times before, with Juve winning two of the three games. The lone victory for Leverkusen was at BayArena when they won 3-1 on March 12, 2002. Even if Leverkusen lose against Juventus, they will advance to the Europa League as the third-place finisher.
