Texas A&M football: 5 Aggies poised for breakout seasons in 2020
Switching positions at any level of football are hard to do but for Ainias Smith it will be a walk in the park. Smith entered his freshman year at Texas A&M as a running back and did some playing time at that position, averaging just under eight yards per carry on seven carries, but became a weapon for the Aggies in the passing game.
Smith’s numbers from a year ago do not scream impressive, with just 22 catches, 248 yards and three touchdowns, but they do shine a light on what is to come in 2020.
And in 2020, Smith has made the official move to wide receiver, in a role I’m sure he will be utilized in multiple ways. Expect Smith to be lining up all over the field and keeping the opposing defense on their toes. Smith can hit the deep ball, use his speed to get away from defenders on a screen pass, and I’m sure we’ll see him run the ball from both the backfield and through a reverse. Heck, who knows, maybe Smith might make a pass or two for the Aggies as well.
But, Smith brings his speed and athleticism to the return game as well. As a freshman, Smith returned 16 punts for 190 yards and returned 13 kickoffs for 257 yards. Smith is a multiple-threat talent who is going to create sparks, switch momentum for the Texas A&M Aggies this fall, and could find himself as a candidate for the Paul Hornung Award at the end of this season.
