Washington head coach Ron Rivera diagnosed with cancer.

It’s been a hard year for everyone but for Washington head coach, Ron Rivera, it just got a bit harder. The coach announced to his team today he’s been diagnosed with cancer, though he remains optimistic about his health.

Rivera was diagnosed with lymph node cancer after a self-check but was told, since it’s still in its early stages, could be “very treatable and curable.” He’s begun a treatment plan and football operations are expected to run as normal. He does reportedly have a plan B in case that’s needed down the line.

He’s also sent a message via Adam Schefter, “Rivera wants to pass along his gratitude to team doctors, trainers and health-care specialists for helping him through treatments. He also wants to thank the Snyders, the entire Washington organization, his assistant coaches, players, fans, friends and family for love and support.”

Rivera is 58-years-old.
