Ohio State football helmets are one of the most recognizable and iconic in college football but the Buckeyes lids will have a new look in 2020.

Besides the effects of the coronavirus pandemic delaying and reducing the college football season this season, the story of 2020 is how social justice has been at the forefront of the conversation.

From programs like Clemson to Ohio State to Alabama to Texas to USC, several college football programs had social justice and racial equality marches, voter registration initiatives and otherwise pro-active measures taken to ensure their voices are heard as well as lifting up the voices of those who don’t have the same platform.

Clemson sported helmet decals to coincide with their social justice efforts, and with their season starting on Oct. 24, the Ohio State football helmets will add a social justice decal as well.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, the social justice decal will be determined by the end of the week.

As an example, Clemson had stickers saying “love” and “Black Lives Matter” and “equality” so that could be along the lines that Ohio State is thinking with the helmet decal they’ll wear for the 2020 season.

Hopefully, Ohio State football fans will be on board with the decision from the players, coaches and university, but sadly, it’s probably wishful thinking to expect a 100 percent unanimous approval. It’s just the byproduct of the 2020 society we’re all living in and trying to make better.

I applaud Ohio State football players and coaches for taking this measure and look forward to celebrating it when the decal is presented and during the first game they wear them, which will be Oct. 24 when the Buckeyes host the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Ohio State football helmets are among the most iconic and recognizable with the Buckeye helmet stickers adorned, but making space for social justice is a great touch to go with the classic look and tradition.
