The Champions League group stage kicks off on Tuesday with Barcelona hosting Ferencvarosi at Camp Nou. Barcelona are in the Champions League for the 17th consecutive season. Ferencvarosi are in the group stage for the first time since 1995.
In their last Champions League game, Barcelona were humiliated in the semifinal by Bayern Munich, losing 8-2. That loss forced the club to undergo significant changes. Manager Ronald Koeman was hired and several stalwarts were allowed to leave the club. However, all the changes have not paid off immediately, as they are 13th in the table with seven points in their first four games. While Lionel Messi has long been Barca’s superstar, Ansu Fati is being to emerge as the next great star of the club. The 17-year-old leads the club with three goals this season.
Ferencvarosi are one of the smallest clubs in the Champions League group stage. However, that is the beauty of the Champions League, when clubs from smaller European nations get the chance to play against European heavyweights like Barca. Ferencvarosi have been dominant in the Hungarian league over recent seasons, winning three of the last five league titles. The Budapest-based club were able to advance through the Champions League qualifying rounds to get into the group stage.
