Caden Sterns joins Sam Cosmi in former Texas football players opting out of 2020 season.

In as many days, Caden Sterns and Sam Cosmi opted out the rest of the way for Texas football.

The Texas Longhorns will no longer be playing in the Big 12 Championship game. By losing to the Iowa State Cyclones at home on Friday afternoon, Texas suffered its third conference loss of the year. Before their next game at the Kansas State Wildcats, offensive tackle Sam Cosmi and now safety Caden Sterns have opted out for Texas’ final two conference games of the 2020 season.

How much longer will Tom Herman be leading Texas football?

While Sterns thanked his former head coach for his time in Austin, there is a growing belief Tom Herman is not long for the Texas job. Texas will likely go 7-3 this season with their plus-one schedule with losses to TCU, Oklahoma and Iowa State. However, a loss to either Kansas State or an unthinkable one to the Kansas Jayhawks could leave athletic director Chris Del Conte no choice.

Herman feels confident about his standing at the Texas job, but outside of that Sugar Bowl win over a Georgia Bulldogs team that did not even want to be there two years ago, what does Herman and his program have to show for it? For guys like Cosmi and Sterns to opt out when there are games to be played, it means it is a culture of me and not we down in Austin. It shows.

Cosmi and Sterns made the choices best for themselves and their NFL futures to leave Texas now.
