3 teams who can rescue Carson Wentz’s career
1. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts currently have one quarterback under contract for next year (rookie Jacob Eason). Philip Rivers is on a one-year deal and will turn 39 this week, so a return for a second year in Indianapolis is as likely as retirement at this point. Backup Jacoby Brissett is in the final year of his contract.
The Colts currently have the third-most projected cap space for 2021 ($67.716 million, according to Over The Cap). So they can make an aggressive move in free agency (Dak Prescott?) or the trade market (Matt Ryan?), and still have room to fortify an already very good roster.
In terms of Wentz, there’s a significant tie to the Colts. Head coach Frank Reich was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in Wentz’s first two seasons, including the 2017 campaign when Wentz was an MVP candidate over 13 starts (33 touchdown passes) before suffering a torn ACL. Reich’s departure is easy to point to as the start of Wentz’s drop-off, even if deeper dives expose Wentz as always being a mediocre quarterback.
If any coach can really fix Wentz, it’s probably Reich. The Colts talent base has also been built far better, due to the good work led by GM Chris Ballard, and that would set him up for success. If the Eagles are ready to move off Wentz, Indianapolis would be a soft and ideal landing spot.
