The Saints were gifted a second-quarter TD but passed it up.

The New Orleans Saints went into halftime of their crucial Week 15 meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs trailing 14-9, but could have been tied had they not wasted a golden opportunity to pounce on a Demarcus Robinson error.

Robinson made the risky decision to reverse course on a punt return in the waning seconds of the first half after collecting a kick from Thomas Morstead.

And Chiefs fans had their hearts in their mouths when the ball popped loose and rolled towards the endzone, giving the Saints the chance to level the scores at 14-14.

However, a collection of Saints players failed to gather the ball and score the touchdown, instead seeing it drift out of the endzone, leaving the Chiefs breathing a sigh of relief as they gave up only a safety.

Tommy Lee Lewis returned the subsequent free-kick 34 yards but the Saints ran out of time to reduce the deficit further.

With the Saints needing to beat the defending Super Bowl champions to keep pace with the Green Bay Packers in the NFC, they can ill-afford to waste opportunities. They may live to regret their failure to pounce on Robinson’s fumble if they cannot turn things around in the second half.
