Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day is not eagerly anticipating the quarterback decision that awaits with the departure of Justin Fields.

For the first time in a while, there are questions surrounding who will be the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes when spring practice begins. The Buckeyes fell short to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game and with Justin Fields headed to the NFL, a crucial quarterback competition awaits.

It’s a three-man race for the job. The 2020 backup quarterbacks, Jack Miller III and C.J. Stroud will the favorites for the starting job, with Stroud having a leg-up. Meanwhile, five-star freshman Kyle McCord will certainly be looking to throw his name in the hat as well.

In reference to the impending contention, Day admitted it’s a situation he’d rather not be in.

Since his arrival at the school in 2018, Day’s quarterback situations have been pretty clear. Dwayne Haskins led the helm for the Buckeyes that year after Joe Burrow was hurt and eventually transferred. That decision was Urban Meyer’s to make, however. After Haskins came Fields, who finished as the Heisman runner-up in 2019 and led the Buckeyes to the title game in 2020.

Day also added in the press conference there will likely be more than one spring game for the Buckeyes, giving him a couple of chances to see his three-headed quarterback monster in action.

Day will hope to have this conundrum cleared up before the season kicks off in the fall. There is plenty of time for Stroud, Miller and McCord to compete for the job and establish the best option for Day and Ohio State football coaches.

For now, he’ll focus on his coaching staff and recruiting class to keep the Buckeyes in the mix for a national title.
