The Champions League knockout stage continues on Wednesday with Atalanta hosting Real Madrid at Gewiss Stadium. The Bergamo-based club is fourth in Serie A this season. Real have climbed back into the title race in Spain after winning five of their last six games.
Atalanta were five minutes away from reaching the Champions League semifinal last season in their debut in the competition. In the group stage, the Goddess finished second to advance to the knockout stage for the second straight season. The Goddess will have a difficult path if they are going to match last season’s result. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini will rely on his Colombian strikers to get through Real. Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata have combined for 30 goals and 17 assists in all competitions.
Real Madrid were poor in the group stage, picking up only 10 points but still won their group. The temperature on manager Zinedine Zidane’s seat has decreased with his team appearing to turn the corner since the start of 2021. However, injuries are starting to pile up in the back four and front three. Nine players could potentially miss the first leg against Atalanta. Sergio Ramos will not play and the club does not have a healthy right-back. Striker Karim Benzema could also miss the first leg. Benzema leads the club with 17 goals and would be a significant blow if he cannot play.
