Texans get their Deshaun Watson insurance with Tyrod Taylor signing

In the event that Deshaun Watson does not suit up for the Houston Texans this season, Tyrod Taylor will be his replacement.

Deshaun Watson has been adamant about the fact that he does not want to play for the Houston Texans this season. The 25-year-old signed a contract extension less than six months ago that goes through the 2025 season but has grown increasingly frustrated with how ownership has gone about several moves and hires in recent memory.

While Watson says he has no plans to suit up for Houston, he does still remain on their roster, and it looks like they may have just purchased some insurance.

The Texans have reportedly agreed to terms with former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Houston is still maintaining that Watson is not available for offers, but in case he does hold out or they change course and decide to trade him, they’ve got a veteran quarterback with experience on the roster.

The one-year deal worth up to $12.5 million comes to Taylor after his brief stint with the Chargers. He signed a two-year, $11 million deal with Los Angeles in 2019 and played behind Philip Rivers that year. Taylor was named the starter last season and was made a team captain.

Things went awry when pregame chest pains sidelined the quarterback in October of last season. In what was a horrible mishap by the Chargers’ medical staff, Taylor’s lung was punctured when the team doctor attempted to administer a pain-killing an injection to help him play with cracked ribs.

Houston will now have to figure out what to do with Watson, If he doesn’t intend to play this season, they’ll need to get some value for him as options around the league are thinning out.
