The first leg of the Champions League semifinal kicks off on Tuesday in Spain as Real Madrid host Chelsea. Real eliminated Liverpool to advance to their first semifinal since 2018. The Blues knocked Porto out to advance to the semifinal for the first time since 2014.
Real are unbeaten since Feb. 1. Manager Zinedine Zidane has his club back in La Liga’s title race after falling behind early in the season. With five games to play, Real are only two points behind their cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid. Real continue to deal with injuries as they enter the first leg. Sergio Ramos, Ferland Mendy and Federico Valverde will all miss Tuesday’s game. That will potentially leave Real vulnerable. In the attacking half, Real will turn to Karim Benzema. The French striker leads the club with 29 goals this season.
Chelsea have lost only two games in all competitions since manager Thomas Tuchel took over for Frank Lampard. Despite their strong performances under Tuchel, the Blues are no sure thing to qualify for the Champions League next season. Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League, with West Ham, Liverpool and Tottenham within striking distance with five games remaining. The Blues enter the first leg with no major injuries. That will give Tuchel plenty of options on how he sets his team up. The biggest decision will be which striking partnership to start. Timo Werner has been given every chance this season but has struggled with his finishing, scoring only 11 goals in all competitions.
